There is no wrong way to do planning, organizing, getting it together, or however you want to refer to it. The secret is to find what works for you and stick with it. Let’s take a closer look.
First, the challenge is to FIND WHAT WORKS FOR YOU. I would bet you have come up with different ways to do a certain chore by either thinking of it on your own or by reading about it in an article. So, you implement your new found idea and you either LOVE IT or you HATE IT. Here is where the second secret comes into play. You must STICK WITH IT. Give yourself some time to decide if your new way is going to work for you. You can’t do it once or twice and decide it isn’t working.
Here’s an example, about 15 years ago I organized under our bathroom sink. I used plastic shoe boxes, labeled every box. Worked for me. For years. Or so I thought. Have you ever heard the saying “When you know better, you do better”. Well, many moves and YEARS later, and of course reevaluating my system, I learned what I thought was working, in fact wasn’t. My laziness would set in and instead of the items going IN their designated spots, the items would end up IN FRONT of their designated spots. The ease wasn’t in it, and if something doesn’t come easy for me, I simply won’t do it. I would open the cabinet and a pile of mess would be laying out, drove me crazy!!! However, at the time, I didn’t realize it wasn’t working. UNTIL the day came when wonderful pinterest was invented (I bless that day, though I feel very confident my husband curses that day), and I found a system I have been using for over two years, AND IT IS WORKING!!! Under all the bathroom sinks has never looked so good. Does it have to take 15 years to figure out something isn’t working, by all means NO, but at the time, I didn’t know better. Give yourself 10 days, maybe even a month. If it just isn’t jiving or you just aren’t sticking with it, or it just isn’t easy for you, move on and try something new.
It all comes down to this, FIND WHAT WORKS FOR YOU and makes you happy. And, STICK WITH IT!!! And, your system will work, too. There isn’t a system out there that will work for all of us. The problem most of us have is being consistent with new things. You can read my article on Taking control of your Monday, maybe it will motivate you to start something new.
How about you, has there been something you didn’t know wasn’t really working, and you did it anyway, until you found a new way. Let me hear from you.
