By now, you may or may not have read the post I wrote about two reasons you struggle with staying organized. You can read the post (here), while I wait if you haven’t already done so. I don’t mind, I promise.
Finding a daily routine that works for you is no easy task, I get that. It is truly a trial and error process. And, it takes time to figure out. Needless to say the “stick to it ness” of doing it all PLUS living life everyday. Good gracious! But, I have a feeling you want to try. And, wanting to try, my friend, is the first step. You have a desire to and that is all you need to start.
While, you are in the process of finding a routine that works for you AND sticking with it. Read How to Find a Daily Routine that works for you (here). I want you to incorporate one rule that will help you feel as though you are making progress in your daily tasks. Plus, if you “stick with it,” you will never again feel as though your home is always a mess. It will always feel picked up, and that is because it will be. Sound too good to be true? Keep reading…
Have you ever noticed that sometimes you touch an item just to move it, then two seconds later have to touch that same item again because it is still in the way? That’s because it is still in the way, it hasn’t been dealt with yet! If you go ahead and deal with it while it is in your hand the first time, it won’t have to be in your hand again. It truly is as simple as that. I refer to this rule as the “One Touch Rule.” Someone told me about this several years ago. Let me tell you how it works, you simply touch something once. You pick up the item, you do NOT put that item back down until it reaches its home. If you are also looking to get your kids of board with the one touch rule. Here is a great post about how to do that, here.
Here is what the one touch rule does NOT look like – You pick up an item off the living room floor, and move it to a chair, just to turn around later in the day, pick up that same item and put it in your room, on your bed. Just to turn around at bed time and move that same item AGAIN into the chair in your room. Just for it to still be sitting there the next morning, waiting for you to put it back where it belongs. No, that is not an example of what the one touch rule is about. And, actually if you go back and count, you touched that one item FOUR times and it still isn’t put away. Does this sound too familiar? Or am I the only one who has had this happen to them, more than once.
Now, let me show you an example of how it is suppose to work. So, you are going around picking up the house, there is all kinds of craziness going on, stuff everywhere. You pick up an item, whatever the item may be, you do NOT put that item down until it has made its way to its home. It truly is that simple! And, you don’t have to see or touch that item again. Well, until the next time it finds its way out, where it isn’t suppose to be.
So, the next time you go to just move something out of the way, remember the one touch rule. Once you pick it up, it must be put away.
