Let’s be honest with ourselves for a minute, shall we? Can we honestly say that every item in our home has its own place to call home? Our toothbrush and bath towel get put back every day after we use them, so they rest peacefully in their home until they are needed again, right? Which means, the next time we go to reach for the toothbrush, we’ll know exactly where to look. But, does the same hold true for other items throughout our home? Do the bills have a place to call home? Your dirty laundry? How about your pictures, where do they call home?
Reasons everything needs a place to call home:
- You’ll always know where everything is.
- Your home looks neater.
- By everything having a home, you know what you have and if you have room for anything else.
- You know if you are about to run out of something.
- You no longer have to go searching for items.
- Saves time
- Everyone in your home knows where everything goes. No more guessing or asking Mom where something is.
- You’ll be saving money because you aren’t going out buying the same item again.
- Makes life easier all the way around.
- No more feelings of being overwhelmed since everything has a home.
There can be some obstacles when creating homes for everything. Let’s see if we can address those now.
Maybe you have the desire to create a home for everything, but you lack space. You don’t have a counter or a drawer in your bathroom to store your toothbrush or hairbrush. That’s when it’s time to get creative.
You may not have space, but you do have walls and doors. Using items that help you create spaces for each item to have a home can be difficult when you already lack space, but you can look for items that can be used for vertical organizing to help you out with that.
Maybe you have a place for everything, but no one else in your home follows where the items are supposed to be returned to. They knew where to go to get the item, but for whatever reason said item never finds its way back home. Maybe it would help to label the places until your family gets the picture and returns things to their home? I tend to label everything. I go as far as labeling drawers so they know where to put what. If you are interested in labeling different areas in your home, here is the label maker I use and love (affiliate link).
When you run out of room
Sometimes finding a home for each item we bring into our home can be overwhelming. By having a home for every item helps your home to look and feel a lot less cluttered.
If you have run out of room for all of your belongings to have a home, maybe it’s time to declutter some of the stuff you currently own. While you are in the process of decluttering be sure to create a home for pieces to donate. By having a box centrally located for everyone to put items in they no longer want or use.
