This is it! This is the YEAR you are going to get your act together. Sound familiar? I know the feeling, there is something I have been wanting to do for over 10 years now and hope to finally accomplish my goal THIS YEAR.
Is this your year to become better organized? I am going to give you one of the best ways to accomplish your goal today. Want me to let you in on the secret behind being organized? It is all about creating habits. That’s how easy it is. I am going to show you how. This Year You will be Creating 12 Habits For Becoming Better Organized.
So, we have to take the goal we want to reach and break it down into smaller pieces. If you just say, I am going to get organized this year. Guess how far you will get, not very. Let’s break down how we want to be better organized. What do you want to accomplish by being better organized? Do you want to be able to find things you are looking for? Do you want to walk in your house and feel at peace instead of tense? If you are looking for both, let’s see if we can do that. It will take time, but it can and will be done if you stick to it.
Here is how we are going to achieve our goal. We are going to break it down by months. Think of twelve things inside the word organization that you want to accomplish. Let me show you an example.
We are going to start small. What we are doing right now is creating a habit.
Make your bed EVERY SINGLE DAY. And, if it is important to you, have your children also make their bed. Remember, this is an example. If you already do this, find something else that will help you with your ultimate goal. And do it for a whole month, every single day.
In addition to making your bed everyday (hopefully it is now a habit and only takes a second to do). Make it a habit to take your mail to the trash everyday while you sort through it. Go ahead and throw the trash away. After the trash from your mail is thrown away, take your bills and your important papers to the place you have established.
Now, in addition to making your bed everyday and sorting your mail over the trash can. This month you also get to implement the One Touch Rule. Every single day, take 10 minutes out at the end of your day and do the One Touch Rule. If you aren’t clear what the One Touch Rule is, I have added the link so you can read about it.
The list of things you do every day is growing steadily, but I bet making your bed, sorting through your mail everyday, and implementing the one touch rule has become an old hat by now. This month, let’s add planning our meals. This isn’t something that gets done daily, but rather weekly or bi-weekly depending on you. It will just be something you have to keep up with since it isn’t done everyday. And I have just the product to help you keep all your meal ideas in the same place. This meal planner helps keep you organized, knowing what’s for dinner everyday.
Adding to the ever growing list of four habits we are creating, this month we will to wash the dishes every night. This may be something you already do and if so, great. You can add something else here in the spot. If not, now would be a great time to get in the habit of doing so. Remember our ultimate goal is to be over all organized in our daily habits come the end of the year.
Half way through the year, WOW!!! Staying on track with creating daily habits? I bet you are doing a great job. Once you get into the habit of being organized you don’t want to go back, have you gotten to that point yet? This month let’s add to our list. This month let’s add a simple one, well – it should be, but honestly I know I struggle with doing enough of this. Let’s add drinking 8 glasses of water a day. It is summer, so we need to stay hydrated. Plus, when we drink plenty of water everyday so many things benefit.
Summer! Such a fun time of year. Be sure to not slack on your daily habits when you come back from vacation. This next add on will benefit you more than you know. And, you just may turn your nose up to it and if you do that is fine, just pick something to replace it with for the month. Before you do, let’s consider the benefits. This month while you are planning your menu also add in some freezer meals. We are going to make a weeks worth of freezer meals so you can try them. You will see the time you can save in the kitchen, in addition to real meals you are going to be able to enjoy around the table on busy school nights which are just around the corner. Freezer cooking helps you save time and money, not to mention the quality time you will get during dinner by eating around the table together every night. You can learn more about freezer cooking in my eBook, The Ultimate Guide to Freezer Cooking.
I am sure by now you have noticed that we are adding to the list every month or I hope you have. And, I bet by now your house is staying more picked up and you have created some daily habits that are good habits. When you walk in your house now, I bet you are feeling more at peace and being more organized. Am I right or am I right? Ha.
Anyway, we are now well into the second part of the year, and I bet these daily tasks have become so easy for you to do and also only take a couple minutes out of your day to accomplish all the tasks. This month, in addition to the above we are going to start writing a to do list every night before we go to bed for the following day. Here’s how that will look.
On Sunday evening, look at your calendar and write out everything that needs to happen in the week. To include the routine things that happen every week. Then, every evening you make your daily to do list, which will include your daily chores, phone calls that need to be made, errands to run, bills to pay, etc. Doing this every evening will help you wake up know you have things that need to be done and you will go ahead and do them.
Make yourself a bedtime. A regular sleep schedule is important. It helps our brains and our bodies. If you don’t already have one, take this month to make one. Go to bed every night at the same time. You will see a difference before the month is up. Having a regular bedtime helps your body create a sleep schedule and is very important for our health and our daily lives. Don’t forget to do a bedtime in addition to ALL THE OTHER HABITS.
This is something you may already do, but if not let’s start this month. Put stuff back were it comes from. This is kind of like the One Touch Rule, but different because I am referring to daily things. The One Touch Rule seems to be odd ball things that are out. So, let me explain what I want you to put back after you have used it. Things like your toothbrush and tooth paste, hairbrush, shoes, purse, clothes after you have worn them. These items should already have homes, after you have used them just go ahead and return them immediately, every single day! You will see a huge difference if you do this every month. Be sure to make the stuff easy for you or you won’t keep doing this daily. Let me explain further, if you get dressed every day in your bathroom or closet, that should be where your dirty clothes basket is. Make it easy for you, any unnecessary trips around your room and you will likely NOT keep up with this months habit.
Ready for this one? Loving the results? I know it has taken a whole year, but by doing it over the course of the year you will be more likely to keep up the habits you have created. This month, every single time you get out of your car to go into your house take out all your trash and anything that doesn’t belong it there. Every time. This way every time you get in your car it will feel clean and will have no clutter or mess.
So, what do you need to do this month that hasn’t been done in your home yet? Maybe since this is a busy month gearing up for Christmas we will do something on the easy side. Let’s make a cleaning schedule. And however often you clean, in terms of dusting and vacuuming, cleaning of the bathrooms, etc.) do it. If you dust whenever you feel like it, let’s change it to at least once a week. So, a minimum of once a week for a month. By this time of the year dusting and vacuuming plus cleaning your bathrooms will be easy since everything is staying picked up. This task shouldn’t take long every week at all.
Happy with the results? I know you have just read through this to see if it is for you. Is this way of obtaining your goal for the year something that sounds good to you?
